4 November 2015 I published my first blog on Probe around the Globe. This means my travel blog Probe around the Globe is one year old! I feel like I had a digital baby and try to nurture it and take care of it. I kicked things of with my very first post (shame shame) “Why start another travel blog?”.
When I look back now, 1 year later, I think the ideas remain the same. I still want to share my stories with the world and show a different kind of travel. I never expected my travel blog Probe around the Globe would actually change the way I travel. With a few Q&A’s you will get to know me a little better and have some insight in my life as a travel blogger.
Did you know that…?
…I spend roughly 30 hours per week on my travel blog Probe around the Globe? Not adding all the in between moments I brain storm and check social media on the go so if I’m honest, it will be more.
…I accumulated over 13,000 followers on all my social media channels? For me this is a big deal, so make sure to follow me on Instagram!
…My most googled post is about my Mistakes to avoid when you travel from Barcelona to Montserrat? From failure can come something good.
…I only got my first complementary tour after 11 months of blogging? But I didn’t pitch much before that, so I was happy to do the Food Tour around Nice. It was a lot of hard work and I think I will want to do more posts like these in the future. Do you mind reading posts like these?
…I only have 1 sponsored link on my whole blog? I was offered a sponsored link and took the opportunity. It covers my expenses for the domain Probe around the Globe and my hosting of the website. Until now, it is only 1 link, so it not a get rich quick kind of thing.
…Since I started my travel blog Probe around the Globe, I take every picture 2 times? I try to only post horizontal images on the blog, because they fit the story better. But I think the vertical images are better for Pinterest and Instagram, so each image I snap twice: once horizontal and once vertical.
…My biggest worry was not to have enough travels to write about? I only planned 1 trip of 4,5 weeks to South America when I started my travel blog. At that moment I didn’t think I had enough to write about but I managed to travel almost every month for the first year.
1 Year of Travel and Blogging
Since I started my blog in November 2015, I travelled for a long weekend to Dublin in December. After Christmas, I went border hopping and visited 3 countries in 1 day. Right after New Year’s I discovered historic Ypres in Belgium and I travelled to Cologne by train as a solo female traveller.
In May and June I explored Peru, Chile and Bolivia. I went for a short weekend get-a-way with my dad to Liverpool UK in August and visited Nice, France in September. I also took a day trip to lovely Ghent in Belgium (which I still have to blog about).
2nd year of my travel blog Probe around the Globe
So, now you have a little insight into what my first year of travel blogging was like, now let’s talk about the future? What goals do I have for the 2nd year of my travel blog Probe around the Globe?
Work more efficient
To start I definitely want, no need, to work more efficient. I need to cut down my time spend blogging (come on!? 30 hours?! I also have a full time job you know!) and promoting with at least 25%. This will leave more room for important little stuff, like eat healthy and sleep before 2am.
Ok, great idea. But how will I pull that off? I want to focus more on “automatic” promoting. I continuously work on my SEO to get more traffic from Google. I have already bought Tailwind subscription for Pinterest* (15$ dollar off!) as this is my main traffic source. I will also have to ditch a few social media channels, but I haven’t figured out which ones yet. What do you think?
And last but not least: cut the crap and just write and not spend that much time browsing the interwebs. The actual writing doesn’t cost me that much time, I spend most of my time online finding ways to promote and loosing track there. Maybe the speed of my computer will reduce my time even further (or so I tell myself.)
Do I want to earn more money with Probe around the Globe?
I haven’t decided on this yet. Yes, I could also make a post about the best Christmas gifts for travelers and fill it to the brim with affiliate links. Strike that, 10 super cute Christmas gifts for female travelers.* Or male. Or couples. Or all three. Doesn’t matter as long as it is chuck full of links that will earn me money while I am sleeping.
But I don’t feel you would want to read that. (Do you?) I hardly ever read those myself, so why would I want to bother you with it?
But I would like to earn more money with my blog. Enough to cover next year’s costs. Maybe monetize more so I can purchase plans that will help me blog more efficiently (e.g. things that will auto promote my blog auto share valuable content for example).
Grow my blog
My main focus isn’t the money but the reach I’ll have. For the past couple of weeks, I have steadily had 1.200 visitors to my site per week. But I want to grow this to a steady 1.500 (so 200 per day) even when I am not promoting as heavily and travel myself.
I want to grow my Pinterest and optimize my SEO so most of my traffic comes from these sources. All the rest would be bonus.
I also want to get 10k followers on Instagram, just because I like it. You can help by heading over to my Instagram if you’re not already a follower.
Visiting Arequipa was a nice sneak preview into Peruvian life. Machu Picchu was a dream come true and the Sacred Valley was inspiring. But what was the most fun thing I did in Peru? What made me giggle with joy and ecstatic with excitement? New blog now live!! Yes, you’d almost forgot about that part but blogging is most and foremost fun for me. I take pride and joy in writing informative posts that will help others travel more or to places they wouldn’t have thought off. As long as it is fun, I can blog for 100 hours a week if I have to. (But I won’t, I promise myself).
New travel plans for Probe around the Globe
At the moment, I do not have any travel plans after my Andalusian road trip in November. Ieekkkk. Panic attack. I do have enough plans to fill the whole year, but I haven’t booked anything.
I do look different at my next travel destination though. On one side, I read so many blogs and get so many great new travel destination ideas. But on the other side, I do not want to blog about the things all travel bloggers blog about. I want to offer something more unique and less generic. How dow do you decide where to go next?
Having said that, I’d love to go to Portugal. Or Croatia, or Italy again. And Greece is still on the bucket list. So what will I write about in the next year on my travel blog Probe around the Globe? I have no idea. Join my mailing list and be the first to get notified!
